The Remain in Mexico, or Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP) first put in place in early 2019 is a controversial policy for asylum seekers on the Southern US border. It has now forced 60,000, mainly Central Americans to wait in Mexico. Reports of extremely unsanitary living conditions have been widespread for people waiting as their court cases slowly snake their way through law. So far only 113 have made it through the MPP. Furthering its controversial reputation over 800 reports of violence, rape, torture, kidnapping against asylum seekers under MPP. This includes vulnerable populations (pregnant, women, disabled, LGBTQ+) returned to MExico. Despite being ensured in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights these asylum seekers do not get immediate asylum, not guaranteed security, and are often separated from their families. Asylum seekers are stranded in Mexico and struggling to hold on with limited resources and unsanitary conditions. People are forced to live in makeshift camps in close proximity with little access to clean water and bathrooms which leaves everyone vulnerable to illness. They have also had their court dates pushed back as travel and further action between the two countries has been drawn to a halt.
